چکیده

The ability of first-responders to react to the aftermath of natural disasters depends heavily on receiving accurate, real-time data about the structures that may have been affected. Because transportation infrastructure may be unusable, aerial assessments are the gold standard by which such assessments are performed. The advent of mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) and autonomous aircraft represents a unique opportunity to allow for rapid response, while minimizing the cost of deployment and increasing reliability and operator safety. This paper describes the key challenges to implement fault-tolerant and efficient deployments of collaborative autonomous aircraft to increase operational reliability and performance when performing aerial sensing and assessment. Some challenges are affected by mobility, such as wireless communication, group navigation, and data collection. Security also represents a challenge during the operation of the MANET. We consider the effects of limited resources (e.g., real-time processing power, battery packs) available on the aircraft. By understanding both the application context and the resource availability, networked aircraft can reorganize to ensure resiliency for the mission if a resource failure occurs within the network.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Networking Protocols

Unmanned Aerial vehicles (UAV), more commonly known as drones, are widely used by military and civilian applications. They can be used for remote sensing, transportation, scientific research, armed attacks, search, and rescue. They can be used in applications where human presence is dangerous. Drones could be equipped with cameras, sensors, communications equipment, and weapons. UAVs can be pil...

A Camera-Based Target Detection and Positioning UAV System for Search and Rescue (SAR) Purposes

Wilderness search and rescue entails performing a wide-range of work in complex environments and large regions. Given the concerns inherent in large regions due to limited rescue distribution, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based frameworks are a promising platform for providing aerial imaging. In recent years, technological advances in areas such as micro-technology, sensors and navigation have...

An elevation map from a micro aerial vehicle for Urban Search and Rescue

The developments in unmanned aerial vehicles make it possible to use this platform on a much larger scale. The current challenge is to use a team of flying robots to explore a city block, place lookouts at strategic points and if possible to enter some of the buildings in the block, to search for hazards and/or people. This challenge is still quite ambitious, but allows researchers to explore s...

Design of an Energy Efficient Routing Protocol for MANETs based on AODV

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) also called mesh networks are self-configuring networks of mobile devices connected by wireless links. MANETs are deployed in situations where there is no e xisting infrastructure, such as emergency search and rescue, military, etc. Each application has a different set of requirements. In this paper we concentrate on emergency search and rescue operations which r...

An Optimization Approach for Cooperative Communication in Ad Hoc Networks

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are a useful organizational technique for providing communication infrastructure to wireless devices. They consist of loosely coupled units, that communicate locally only to accessible neighbors. Routing of data among non accessible units in a MANET is made possible through multi-hop retransmission. There are many applications of MANETs, including coordination of...
